MSBOA Solo & Ensemble
Saturday April 16th, 2017
It is that time of year! Solo & Ensemble is a great opportunity for students to develop their individual performance skills, to perform for a judge, and to receive feedback from another professional educator and musician. It is highly recommended that any students who perform a solo either be taking private lessons currently or begin private lessons in order to adequately prepare.
Any students interested in participating in Solo & Ensemble should review the information below with their parents. If you wish to sign up, print the form below and turn into Mrs. Mihalko with your entry fee. Cash is preferred for entry fees, but checks are also acceptable. Checks should be made out to EAST MIDDLE SCHOOL.
All entry forms are due by Wednesday February 1st. NO EXCEPTIONS

4. There are no refunds for cancellations.
5. Students may enter up to three events, if the events are all different.
6. Students taking a solo are highly encouraged to be taking private lessons.
7. Solos do not have to be memorized. Solos with piano accompaniment are required to have an accompanist perform with them at the event. Students are responsible for finding an accompanist to perform with them. You must have an accompanist arranged as soon as possible. DO NOT WAIT to engage an accompanist. Soloists should plan to rehearse with their accompanist at least 2-3 times prior to the festival. Most accompanists offer a package deal, charging one rate for the performance and one or two rehearsals. If needed, ask Mrs. Mihalko or Mr. Drake for references.
8. Select music that is appropriate for this event. It should be "classical", not "pops" music (no movie music, pop arrangements, etc.). If you need help selecting music please ask Mrs. Mihalko.
9. Students can sign up with students from other music classes, but it depends on the instrumentation. Please ask Mrs. Mihalko first.
10. Performance times are announced about two weeks prior to the festival.
11. Events that earn I or II as a rating receive an MSBOA Solo & Ensemble medal.
12. S&E participation requires a commitment to PRACTICING and being PREPARED. If you are unprepared when you perform the judge will notice and your rating will reflect this.
13. Choose ensembles in "like" instrument categories. It is hard to find tuba/obe or cello/trumpet music.
14. You need to play for Mrs. Mihalko at least two times prior to the event.
General Rules:
1. The judges require the ORIGINAL score to read. Copies are not allowed for the judges. Measures must be numbered in the judge's score.
2. All events must have piano accompaniment if one is written. Most solos require piano accompaniment. (If you are not sure, ask Mrs. Mihalko).
3. The music MUST be at least 1 minute and 30 seconds long, without adding repeats, in order to receive a rating. Five minutes is the maximum.
4. In certain situations technology can be used, but at this time it creates a lot of extra work on your part and is not reliable.
5. It is required to provide a receipt of payment to the judge if using printed copies from a website.
