Recommended Supplies & Materials for ALL Students
• Hardcover, 1”, three-ring binder for orchestra only (Black or Blue)
• Sheet protectors for music - highly recommended but not required
• 1 subject notebook, perforated pages, for written or journal assignments
• Pencil (not pen) and highlighter
• Rosin
• Shoulder rest for violins & violas - should be provided with rental instrument
- for students with cases that do not have room to store the shoulder rest, I highly recommend getting a zippered pencil case to
store the shoulder rest in. The pencil case can be attached to the instrument case with a key ring or zip-tie, thus preventing the
shoulder rest from being lost.
• End pin stop or strap for cellos & basses - should be provided with rental instrument
• Cleaning cloth - see Ms. Mihalko if you don’t have one
• Extra Strings – if you are renting an instrument from Shar, Detroit Violin Co., Marshall Music, or Anderson replacement strings are covered with the rental of the instrument. It is preferred that students have a spare set provided so that if/when a string breaks I can replace it in class immediately. If a student breaks a string on a personal or school instrument I do have a small supply of strings that can be purchased.
• Music books - I will be placing a group order for books and will send information home on how to order
- 6th grade: Essential Elements Book 1 (continue using the same book from 5th grade)
- 7th grade: String Basics, book 2
- 8th grade: String Basics, book 3
• Tuning device such as the Korg Chromatic Tuner or a clip-on tuner (Snark - Amazon, or Shar). There are a variety of tuner apps for smartphones. I recommend Cleartune or insTuner
• Metronome – There are a variety of metronome apps and web-based metronomes. An app that I recommend is Pro Metronome or you can use www.metronomeonline.com
I highly recommend purchasing any items from www.sharmusic.com. I have a Recommended Items sheet that lists prices. There are copies available in the Student Center files or follow this link to view.
